As a part of the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), MCC has committed to ambitious goals that help advance the journey towards a zero-carbon economy. In collaboration with our suppliers, MCC has committed to drive sustainable growth through ambitious reduction targets. Working off our baseline year of 2021, MCC will continue to track toward the below milestones.

We&#8217;ve engaged with multiple stakeholder partners throughout the value chain who are also working toward a sustainable future. Only through open and constructive collaboration can we solve the issues that we are facing as an industry.

Local Partnerships

Our plant in Adelaide is actively working on sustainable improvements in their plant. They are putting high standards when it comes to waste and water reduction. Their motto: overcome the challenges.
<h3>Incineration of waste matrix roll</h3>
The challenge was to find a sustainable solution for the waste matrix rolls. This waste is the most difficult to recycle, so an innovative approach was necessary. A successful outcome was developed: we found a not-so-obvious partnership with a cement company in the same region. This company already incinerated its own waste to generate energy. So why not incinerate our waste matrix as well?
We were the first label company to partner with matrix rolls. So it took multiple years of trial-and-error to have an optimized process of incineration. The challenge mostly pertains to the roll density. Persistence pays off: Since early 2020, the process achieving its objective.
The waste matrix is shipped on a weekly basis, with around 30 tons a month of waste. This produces approximately 540,000 MJoules of energy per month. The incineration process became highly popular in the area, so the cement company started a completely separate business – only working on waste incineration. 
<h3>Waterless urinals</h3>
Southern Australia is one of the driest regions in the world. The plant is often imposed water restrictions. Therefore, we took initiative in water reduction by installing waterless urinals.
All original urinals were switched into waterless exemplars. Using chemicals instead to neutralize the urinals. This saves almost 1 million liters of water per year.

MCC Adelaide (Australia) is an advanced player in sustainability

MCC Napa is a textbook example of sustainability. They take a real ambassadorial role in creating awareness on sustainability for the entire Napa team.
Sustainability Committee: a small group for big change 
A team that focuses solely on all things sustainability related sounds like music to our ears. At MCC Napa, eight people from different departments come together quarterly to evaluate opportunities to minimize water usage, energy usage, and waste-to-landfill. Leveraging the combined knowledge and experience of different departments, their ultimate goal is to create a culture of awareness among colleagues.
Strategic Energy Management for air leak detection 
The MCC Napa team partners with MCE’s Strategic Energy Management Program to help identify and manage energy reduction projects. MCE is a not-for-profit public agency that has been setting the standard for clean energy in our communities since 2010. With the help of trainings, on site audits, and monthly meetings, the team worked on many energy reduction projects including LED lighting, duct insulation, and air leak detection.

Green Series make the change
MCC is committed to being a sustainability partner for our customers, with a major focus on the development of sustainable label solutions. The Napa team have developed a Green Series portfolio of material choices geared toward helping customers reduce their environmental footprint and achieving their sustainability goals.
The Green Series offers stocks made with post-consumer waste material that contains recycled content.

MCC Napa takes a leadership role in sustainability

In order to provide all of our stakeholders with key information and data on the impact caused by products, services and businesses; MCC is openly sharing a sustainability report and our external accreditations.
This enables us to be transparent about the risks and opportunities we, as a company, are facing. Transparency does not only refer to our own communication, but also to reporting via internationally recognized sustainability platforms.
Carbon Disclosure Project
To disclose our environmental impact, MCC is responding to CDP, one of the most comprehensive and internationally recognized sustainability reporting platforms. CDP, an international non-profit organization, provides investors with a clear view on how sustainability is incorporated into the business strategy and practices.
Companies that disclose to CDP are scored using letter grades A to D-, and different scores are provided for each focus area (climate change, water, and forests). The scores itself are calculated using questionnaire responses.
Management level (B-) for Climate Change and Water
As part of our structured Sustainability Roadmap, we set ourselves goals for CDP scoring as well. MCC started in 2018 with responding to the climate change and water questionnaires, leading to awareness and disclosures scores. We are happy to announce that we received our 2021 scores and for both categories we achieved the management (B-) level (one year earlier then our goal)!
This significant improvement is a tribute to the work done by all MCC employees in the last year and shows that sustainability is at the core of the entire business.
Awareness level (C) for Forests
As part of our CDP annual submission, we are now including the forest questionnaire as well. For 2021 this gave us an awareness (C) score, a good starting point to build on in the future. But we are not done yet! We care about a better tomorrow, and we will continue our push to do even better in the next year!
