Laughing Owl Whisky takes its inspiration from the long-lost Laughing Owl (Sceloglaux albifacies), a New Zealand native once known for its charisma and mischievous ways. Declared extinct in the early 1900s, the only traces that remain are seventeen preserved eggs held in museum collections across the country.
At the heart of the design is both the owl itself – bold, a little cheeky, slightly knowing and one of those rare eggs, reimagined as the label’s defining form. The egg shape, destined to become a memorable brand device, frames the identity and holds the owl and key brand elements.
Print finishes are deliberately subtle yet highly detailed. Printing on Cotton White paper, a sculpted emboss brings the owl to life in three-dimensional relief, while the typography features a separate fine emboss. High Build Screen screens work with the emboss to create a refined, almost letterpress-like texture that invites touch as much as sight.
